Uso de There is l There are e Quantifiers l Vídeo 2

Vamos falar sobre ‘quantifiers’ /ˈkwɒntɪˌfaɪə(r)/ hoje. Quantifiers são palavras que demonstram quantidade, como a/an; some; any; a couple of; a lot of/lots of; no; much/many e são usadas depois das frases ‘there is’ ou ‘there are’.

O nosso primeiro vídeo sobre ‘there is e there are’ está aqui em cima. Como essas expressões são comuns e importantes na língua inglesa, eu decidi fazer vídeos sobre elas com todos os tempos verbais. Este é o vídeo número 2. Não deixe de assistir se ainda você tem dúvida sobre a sua utilização. Eu ainda falo que os brasileiros se enganam ao usar o verbo ‘have’ ao invés desta estrutura. Então, não seja o próximo a cometer o mesmo erro, o vídeo está bem simples para depois você já escrever os seus próprios exemplos.

Vamos aos exemplos do áudio.

1.    There’s a big supermarket and some nice stores.

2.    There’s no mall.

3.    There are two nice outdoor cafés and a couple /ˈkʌp^əl/ of movie theaters.

Guys, os nativos quando usam esta estrutura na hora de falar, não obedecem a gramática, portanto, independente se a frase estiver no singular ou plural, eles utilizarão a estrutura ‘there’s’ ao invés de ‘there’re’ que é muito mais complicado para eles pronunciarem. Dessa forma ‘There’s’ soa mais natural para eles. De qualquer forma, se vocês estiverem escrevendo uma composição ou qualquer documento para uma faculdade ou mesmo no trabalho, respeite as regras.

   4.    There’s a new swimming pool.

5.    There’s no place to go.

6.    There’s no mall, no fast-food places – just a lot of expensive restaurants.

 

Baseado nessas frases, entende-se que:

O quantifier ‘No’ é usado em frases afirmativas com substantivos contáveis e incontáveis.

There’s no mall.

There are no malls.

There’s no water.

 

‘A’ ou ‘An’ são usados com substantivos singulares.

There is a big supermarket.

There is an apple on the table.

 

E ‘Some’ é usado com substantivos tanto contáveis quanto incontáveis.

There are some outdoor cafés.

There’s some water.

 

Só que ‘Some’ é usado com substantivos incontáveis em frases afirmativas.

There’s some milk in the fridge.

E ‘any’ em frases negativas com substantivos incontáveis também.

There isn’t any coffee.

 

Em frases negativas usamos ‘a’ ou ‘an’ com substantivos singulares.

There isn’t a dog in the car.

E ‘any’ com substantivos no plural, ou seja, contáveis.

There aren’t any seats.

 

‘A couple of’ significa dois ou três (poucos ou poucas)

There are a couple of movie theaters.

There are a couple of apartment buildings.

 

‘A lot of’ ou ‘Lots of’ são usados com substantivos singulares ou plural, ou seja, com substantivos contáveis ou incontáveis.

There are a lot of apples on the tree.

There’s a lot of snow on the road.

 

Você vai ver que ‘many’ ou ‘much’ são usadas com mais frequências em frases negativas:

‘Many’ com substantivos contáveis e ‘Much’ com substantivos incontáveis.

 

There are a lot of carrots but there aren’t many potatoes.

There’s a lot of juice but there isn’t much water.

 

Quando falamos sobre uma lista de coisas, nós usamos ‘there is’ se a primeira palavra da lista inicia com singular ou ‘there are’ se a primeira palavra da lista é plural.

Exemplos: In my bedroom, there’s a bed, two chairs, and a desk.

In the living room, there are two armchairs and a sofa.

There’s no mall, no fast-food places – just a lot of expensive restaurants.
